Hello, I want to propose a link about openAMF:
http://programmaremobile.blogspot.com/2009/10/java-and-amf-by-as3-in-flash.html

In the example I make a simple NetConnection at AS3 client side and a java servlet that communicates with it by OpenAMF library.

There are also other way to get in communications flex as3 and java, see for webservice or blaze framework, in my blog you can find some articles about this.

hope to be welcome!

Very detailed overview of the components lifecycle. Great post!
You might be interested in looking at this example I created in adobe flex that shows the different order that these methods are called and where I talk about the effect that the creationPolicy can have on this: http://simplyolaf.blogspot.com/2009/06/adobe-flex-3-components-lifecycle.html

This is one of the most important thing a Flex developer needs to know, and it's a shame the regular Adobe docs don't cover it as well as you. Good job!

Brilliant post. Has sorted me out a number of times. Boggles my mind why Adobe doesn't have such a list in its docs.

I do have a question though: Step 12a. ( Makes the component visible by setting the visible property to true. ) I am creating a component that has a button which I want to be initially invisible. I set the property in the createChildren() method, but it is still visible. Where should I set the invisibility (for children of my component), so that it is persistent?

PS., I tried placing button.visible=false; in the component's creationComplete event handler, and that works, but when I apply an animation to the component the button reappears.
